From IndustrySpan’s work: For a specialty chemical manufacturer in the Netherlands, the products were strong but the technical detail was buried in generic web pages. After we reorganised the site around the operational problems their customers face and rewrote the content with their technical staff, the first four months brought 54 qualified leads and one major deal closed. Why do manufacturers struggle with generic marketing agencies?
Because generic agencies are built for simple products and short buying cycles, while manufacturers sell complex products to technical buying groups who research alone. Many manufacturers share the same problem: a product that wins on specification, and a market that has barely heard of it. New business still depends on the founder’s network, a few distributors and one or two trade shows a year. Hiring a general marketing agency rarely fixes this, for three reasons.
1. Buyers do their homework without you. Gartner’s research on B2B buying found that buyers spend only 17% of their buying time meeting potential suppliers. When they compare three suppliers, each one gets roughly 5 to 6% of that time (Gartner, press release; Destination CRM). The rest happens online and inside the buying group. If your website and LinkedIn presence cannot answer a process engineer’s questions, you are dropped before sales ever gets a call.
2. Most of your market is not buying today. Research by the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for LinkedIn’s B2B Institute suggests only about 5% of B2B buyers are in the market at any given time (Marketing Week). For capital equipment that is replaced every ten years, the share is even smaller. Campaigns judged on first-month leads get cancelled just before they start to work.
3. Technical buyers see through generic copy. Process engineers, plant managers, procurement, R&D and HSE all look for different things: specifications, application fit, reference installations, risk and total cost. Marketing written for consumers, full of claims and short on facts, loses them in the first paragraph.
What should a B2B marketing agency for manufacturers do?
It should cover the full path from “never heard of you” to “let’s talk”: positioning, content, visibility, lead generation and sales support. These are the marketing services for manufacturers we provide as a manufacturing marketing agency:
Technical positioning and messaging
We define which applications, industries and buyer roles you should lead with, and translate technical capability into clear value for each. This is the foundation every campaign builds on.
Website and search content
Application pages, product explanations and answers to the questions buyers type into Google and AI assistants. Written so an engineer finds it accurate and a buyer finds it clear.
LinkedIn and thought leadership
Company page and expert profiles that show your team’s knowledge. The 2024 Edelman-LinkedIn study found that 73% of B2B decision-makers see an organisation’s thought leadership as a more trustworthy basis for judging its capabilities than its marketing materials (Edelman-LinkedIn).
Lead generation and target accounts
Structured outreach to the companies that fit your offer, from broad lead generation for manufacturers to focused account based marketing for a defined list of high-value accounts.
Sales enablement
Presentations, brochures, case studies and distributor materials that let your sales team and partners explain your product consistently.
Webinars and events
Technical webinars and trade show support that give buyers a reason to engage before they are ready to buy.
How does IndustrySpan work with manufacturers?
In five steps, starting with a free audit and ending in monthly measurement against pipeline.
- Industrial Growth Audit (free). We review your positioning, website, LinkedIn presence, current lead sources and the competitors in your target markets.
- Positioning. We agree on target segments, lead applications and the value proposition for each buyer role.
- Build. We create the content, web pages, LinkedIn presence, sales materials and target account lists the plan needs.
- Run. We launch campaigns, outreach and webinars, working alongside your sales team or distributors.
- Measure and improve. We track engaged accounts, qualified conversations and pipeline, and adjust what is not working.
The foundations come first. Qualified conversations build as campaigns mature, and because industrial buying cycles are long, results should be judged over quarters rather than weeks.

Generic agency vs manufacturing marketing specialist
| Generic marketing agency | B2B marketing agency for manufacturers | |
|---|---|---|
| Product understanding | Learns your product from a brochure | Understands applications, specifications and buyer roles |
| Content | Brand claims and lifestyle messaging | Application-led, technically accurate, proof-based |
| Main channels | Instagram, Facebook, broad paid social | LinkedIn, search, targeted email, webinars, trade shows |
| What gets measured | Reach, likes, website traffic | Engaged target accounts, qualified conversations, pipeline |
| Sales involvement | Minimal | Planned with sales and distributors from day one |
| Time horizon | Monthly campaign results | Quarters, matched to industrial buying cycles |
| Market knowledge | Mostly domestic | Europe, including NL, DE and BE |
How to choose a manufacturing marketing agency: six questions
- After one meeting, can they explain your product back to you in plain language?
- Have they worked with companies in your sector? Ask for examples and references.
- Who writes the technical content, and how is accuracy checked?
- What do they report on: likes and traffic, or qualified conversations and pipeline?
- How will they work with your sales team or distributors?
- Do they know the markets you want to grow in?

Frequently asked questions
What does a B2B marketing agency for manufacturers do?
It helps manufacturers get found and trusted by technical buyers, and turns that visibility into qualified sales conversations. Typical work covers positioning and messaging, website and search content, LinkedIn and thought leadership, lead generation, target account programmes and sales materials.
How is marketing for manufacturers different from other B2B marketing?
Products are complex, buying groups are technical and sales cycles are long. Buyers often already have a supplier. Content has to be accurate and proof-based, and success is measured in qualified conversations and pipeline rather than clicks.
How long does it take to see results?
The foundations (positioning, core content and target account lists) come first. Qualified conversations build over the following months. Because only a small share of buyers is in the market at any time, results should be judged over quarters.
Do you work with manufacturers outside the Netherlands?
Yes. We work across the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, and with manufacturers from outside the EU who want to enter the European market.
Which marketing channels work best for manufacturers?
LinkedIn, search content for application and problem terms, targeted email, technical webinars and trade shows usually do the most work. The right mix depends on how many potential customers you have and how they buy.
